NEWS: Center to offer two grant-writing courses in Promise Zone

One-day, intensive training sessions seek to catalyze requests for funding in region

The Center for a Better South will offer one-day grant-writing courses in February and March by recognized professionals to help organizations improve skills for seeking federal funding available through the S.C. Promise Zone.

“We’ve heard in focus groups this fall from Jasper County to Barnwell County that people want specialized training so that they can apply for various federal grants that are available to organizations and communities through the Promise Zone designation,” Better South President Andy Brack said.  “Our new grant-writing sessions are the first of several entrepreneurial training opportunities designed to help people learn more so we can accomplish Promise Zone goals.” Read more

Promise Zone town halls to be next week in Bamberg, Walterboro

Officials will outline progress, discuss new training academy

16.scpz.newsLeaders of community organizations and neighborhoods are invited to attend town hall meetings next week in Bamberg and Colleton counties to learn about progress in the S.C. Promise Zone and help to develop a new training program

  • Oct. 3, 5 p.m. — Bamberg County residents are encouraged to attend a one-hour information session  at Bamberg County Council chambers in Bamberg for the Promise Zone update and focus group about training opportunities.  The meeting will end at 6 p.m. to allow for the monthly meeting of Bamberg County Council, which will start at 6:30 p.m.
    • Location:  Council chambers, 2959 Main Highway, Bamberg, S.C.
  • Oct. 4, 4:45 p.m. — Colleton County residents will receive a similar update and be able to participate in a discussion about training opportunities.  The meeting, which will be held in Colleton County Council chambers, will end at 5:45 p.m. to allow for a scheduled meeting of Colleton County Council.
    • Location: Council chambers, 109 Benson St., Walterboro, S.C.

An update of new funding opportunities and resources for the S.C. Lowcountry Promise Zone

UPDATE OVERVIEW

RECENT NEWS:   A wire decking and shelving company is investing $2.5 million in a Walterboro facility that will create 50 jobs; and an Allendale County health care organization has won a $325,000 health infrastructure grant from the federal government.

NEW FUNDING OPPORTUNITIES: Learn about a grant program that funds outcome-focused education strategies and a host of other education-related grant opportunities.  Additionally, there’s information on the Small Business Administration’s Growth Accelerator Challenge; Treasury’s Low-income taxpayer clinic grant program;  a new funding program for health centers; and a USDA effort to fund rural broadband.

OTHER OPPORTUNITIES:  There are several other funding opportunities with coming deadlines  — from water and wastewater grants and an HUD jobs program to other programs to grow rural businesses and help with specialty crop development.
