Walterboro project engages citizens through arts, culture

By the S.C. Arts Commission  |  A small group of Walterboro citizens has embraced a new opportunity to make a positive contribution to the community through involvement with the South Carolina Arts Commission.

For several months, Gary Brightwell, director of the Colleton Museum, Farmers Market and Commercial Kitchen, has been leading a team to consider issues local citizens face and how arts and culture might be incorporated to address one or more of those challenges. Last spring, when the South Carolina Arts Commission reached out about a pilot program, The Art of Community: Rural S.C., Brightwell answered the call.  She agreed to serve as the “maven,” or connector, for Colleton County. Today, as part of the Art of Community initiative, she and her team are exploring the most relevant ways to connect local citizens with issues related to food, health and agriculture and adding a dose of arts and culture as a binder. Community development training set for July 13

SC Promise Zone

Walterboro  will host a training session inside the Promise Zone on July 13 for people interested in learning more about community development.

The S.C. Association for Community Economic Development (SCACED) will hold the training event from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. , July 13, at the Colleton Commercial Kitchen, 506 E. Washington St., Walterboro, S.C.  The session, called “Engaging Strategic Partners in Community Development,” will feature trainer Robert Cooke and his team from the Southeast Georgia United Empowerment Zone Inc.

The training will focus on how rural municipalities can develop their communities and improve their economies.  In addition to presentations and facilitated discussions on building connections among local governments and other partners, the day-long event will feature development by participants of basic action plans to allow them to take the next steps for community development in their communities.

Wire company to open Walterboro operations

MAY 5, 2016  |  A Minnesota-based wire decking and shelving company will invest $2.5 million to open a 31,000 square-foot manufacturing facility in Walterboro.  The project is expected to create 50 new jobs, officials said.

“It’s exciting to see a company like J&L Wire, which is dedicated to making products right here in the U.S., make the decision to establish operations in South Carolina,” said Gov. Nikki Haley.  “J&L’s $2.5 million investment and the 50 new jobs it means for Colleton County are real reasons to celebrate in Colleton and across our entire state.”

J&L Wire, which is headquartered in St. Paul., Minn., will open its state-of-the-art facility in the former Press Building on Mable T. Willis Boulevard in Walterboro.  The company, which was founded in 1980,  is a leading manufacturer of galvanized wire decking and shelving used in warehouse storage, material handling and logistics. The established product line includes Galva-Deck® wire decking and Boss Hog™ woven wire flooring for agricultural confinement panels.  Read more →
