Walterboro gets $2 million grant to improve wastewater plant

JAN. 5, 2016 | The City of Walterboro has received a $2,040,000 grant as part of the S.C. Lowcountry Promise Zone to make significant upgrades to its water and sewer treatment plant, officials announced today.

The grant from the U.S. Economic Development Administration is expected to enhance the community’s economic diversification, ultimately creating 129 jobs and attracting $10.5 million in private investment. Read more

Promise Zone partner gets $100,000 fair housing grant

Housing and Urban Development to fund program to cut housing discrimination

NOV. 13, 2015 — The state affiliate of the Corporation for Community and Economic Development United, Inc., has received a $100,000 grant from the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development to help educate disabled Promise Zone residents deal with housing discrimination.

“We will do outreach and public education programs to raise awareness of the federal fair housing law that protects individuals,” said Patsy Gardner, executive director of the S.C. affiliate of the CCEDU.  “We will be targeting families with disabled members in the rural, socially-disadvantaged areas of the Promise Zone as it relates to housing discrimination.” Read more

Hampton agency gets $8.3 million for wastewater projects

SEPT. 17, 2015 — Lowcountry Regional Water System is the first recipient of a multimillion dollar grant package through the new South Carolina Lowcountry Promise Zone, officials announced today.

A $1,864,000 grant and $6,480,000 loan through the U.S. Department of Agriculture will allow the Hampton County-based water and sewer agency to make improvements that will expand sewerage capacity, which will make the county more attractive for economic development, said Brian Burgess, general manager of Lowcountry Regional Water System. The project also will allow the agency to rehabilitate sewer lines in Hampton, upgrade the agency’s water meter system throughout the county, and paint and repair water towers in Yemassee and Gifford.
